KG1 – Grade 5

IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)

Al Sahwa Kindergarten and Primary School is a close-knit, welcoming community where every child is known, valued and encouraged to flourish.

Through the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), students develop as curious, confident and engaged learners in an environment that values strong partnerships between students, families and the School.

Our values of Respect, Service and Integrity are at the heart of teaching, learning and everyday life, creating a caring community where children are supported to grow academically, socially and personally.

“Omwana ni wa bhone” is an African proverb which means a child’s upbringing belongs to the community. At Al Sahwa, we are that community and each of us is responsible for the wellbeing of every student.

An Engaging Curriculum

Learning at Al Sahwa is engaging, interactive and connected to students’ interests and the world around them. Through the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and its programme of inquiry, students are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas, make connections and develop a deeper understanding of their learning.

Throughout their PYP journey, students develop essential communication, self-management, research, thinking and social skills. They are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, exercise agency and turn their learning into meaningful action.

From KG1 to Grade 3, each class is supported by a homeroom teacher and teaching assistant. Arabic, specialist and learning support teachers work collaboratively with classroom teachers to understand and respond to each child’s individual learning needs, helping every student feel supported, challenged and able to experience success.

“As an alumnus of Al Sahwa Schools, the vision and mission of the school has always been to build a community that is rich with the heritage and omani culture but with an international twist which offers students the opportunity of learning in an open-minded environment but still keeping their values close to heart.”

Primary Years Programme (PYP)

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a curriculum framework designed for students ages 3 to 12 (KG1 & 2, Grades 1 – Grade 5). It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is defined by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived from subject areas, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry based learning.

The PYP covers the following subjects:

  • Arabic language
  • Islamic Studies
  • Omani Social Studies
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Education
  • Physical Education
  • Visual Art
  • Music

Programme of Inquiry

The Al Sahwa Schools Programme of Inquiry (POI) provides the curriculum framework for learning throughout the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). Developed specifically for our learners and our context, it connects meaningful learning experiences across subjects while encouraging students to understand themselves, their community and the wider world.

Through the Programme of Inquiry, students have opportunities to:

  • Explore experiences and ideas that connect people across cultures and communities.
  • Inquire into issues of both local and global significance.
  • Draw on knowledge, concepts and skills from different subject areas and apply them across their learning.
  • Make connections beyond individual subjects through transdisciplinary learning and teaching.
  • Revisit important concepts and ideas throughout their PYP journey, developing increasingly broad and in-depth understanding.
  • Explore what it means to be Omani, developing pride in and understanding of their own identity, culture and heritage.
  • Engage with the common themes and principles that connect learning across PYP schools around the world.

This approach allows students to see learning as connected rather than confined to individual subjects, while ensuring that their educational experience remains meaningful to their lives, their identity and the world around them.

PYP Exhibition

The PYP Exhibition is an important culminating learning experience for Grade 5 students as they complete the Primary Years Programme and prepare to transition to the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).

During the Exhibition, students identify an issue or opportunity that is meaningful to them and undertake an extended inquiry into their chosen area. Working both independently and collaboratively, and supported by mentors and the wider learning community, students apply the knowledge, concepts, skills and approaches to learning they have developed throughout their PYP journey.

The Exhibition places student agency at its heart. Students take an active role in shaping their inquiry, making decisions, taking meaningful action and communicating their learning to others.

It is also a celebration of the wider learning community that has supported students throughout their Primary years. Families, teachers, mentors and members of the School community come together to recognise students’ growth as confident, internationally minded learners who are empowered to make a positive difference.
